Who: Tamell and Heather
When: Early evening
Where: Morpeth Town

Tamell left the small tavern, clutching in her hands a long box. She made gentle shushing sounds as she slipped through the crowd, moving to a more quiet area across the street. She paused when she was out of the way, hoisting herself up to sit on a deep windowsill, balancing the box on her lap.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a beaten cigarette tin, and pulled out a cigarillo. She normally kept them for after performances, but since she hadn't performed in a while, she figured what the hell. She struck a match on the lid of the box and drew back, blowing a cloud of smoke into the early evening air. She stroked the lid of the box and hummed to herself, savouring the smoke.

Tamell broke her reverie and peered at the young woman standing beside her. From where she was sitting, Tamell was a good foot higher than the woman, and she gave her a lazy smile. Noticing the flyer that was being held out to her she nodded her head. Looks like she wasn't the only one who was looking for a new home.

"Reckon so, jus' signed up myself," she said, slipping down off the sill and standing next to the woman. She placed the box carefully down where she had just been sitting and extended a hand, the cigarillo jutting out of her mouth.

"Name's Tamell. I can take you there, if you like?" The woman seemed a little scared and alone, and though Tamell was far from motherly she was usually happy to help others - if they were going her way.

Heather breathed a sigh of relief when the woman nodded her head and felt very grateful for having met someone who actually worked at the carnival. Taking the extended hand she shook it “I’m Heather.”

“Could you, if it’s not too much trouble?”

Tamell picked up the box and gestured for Heather to follow her. She wove through the back streets, humming occasionally and stroking the box. At one stage the box moved of it's own accord, and she paused to make a tutting noise.

After a few minutes they were out of the heart of the town and strolling down a dirt road. The dusk sky was a relief, the heat falling a few welcome degrees. The sun had fallen but the sky was still a burn orange to the west. Tamell turned and examined the woman walking beside her.

"Acrobat?" she asked after a beat.

Heather followed Tamell, occasionally shooting glances at the box she held. She was curious about it’s contents but didn't know her well enough to be comfortable asking.

As they walked in silence, Heather began to worry. Maybe this carnival had already filled up all the positions and didn’t need anyone new. She didn’t have a backup plan if this didn’t work out.

She was still lost in these thoughts when Tamell spoke up.“Acrobat? Oh, no I never did well with heights. I’m a fire breather.” She paused before adding “Think they’re still looking for people?”

Tamell thought about the carnivals of her past, and the considerably bare grounds by comparison. She nodded her head.

"Dare say they are," she responded as the lights faded and the noise of the town dissapeared. All around them, Tamell could hear the rustling and scuttling of life. Her worn shoes scuffed the dirt as she walked.

"I've only just arrived, but I can show you round, introduce you to tha man in charge. Might be best to wait till mornin," she added with a glance to the sky.

Heather relaxed a little, "That's good to know."

"If you could," Heather began, responding to Tamell's offer "I'd be real appreciative of your kindness."

She too looked up at the darkening sky. "Morning would probably be best."

Tamell gave her a smile and continued on, humming to her box. They reached the carnival grounds and Tamell gave Heather a slight wave, signalling her to follow. She made her way back over to her cart, a little ways away from the other tents that were set up. She noticed another new tent set up next to a wagon, the horses hitched not far off. More people were arriving. It would soon feel like a carnival should.

There was a murmur of voices around the tents, and Tamell placed the box on her cart and busied herself for a few moments lighting several oil lamps that she had stored. She hung them in the tree near her bedroll, casting some illumination in the now dark night.

Tamell grabbed the box and sat down on her bedroll, patting a spot beside her for Heather to sit down. She stroked the box a few more times before opening the lid and slipping in a hand.

"Would you like to see my latest act?" she asked, being as friendly as she could.

Heather followed Tamell, taking in what she could see of the carnival. It was modest but had a good number of people it seemed. It probably wouldn't put on a bad show once it got going.

When they reached Tamell's cart, Heather watched as she light the oil lamps and continued to soak in the sights of the inhabitants of the carnival settling in for the night.

Heather gladly accepted Tamell's invitation to sit down. They hadn't walked far but Heather felt tired all the same. It had been a rough couple of days.

She set her bag beside her and sat cross legged, idly watching Tamell stroke the box she held.

“Sure!” Heather said perking up when Tamell offered to show her her act. She felt a bit embarrassed that she hadn't thought to ask what Tamell's act consisted of and wondered if it had anything to do with the contents of the box.
