Who: Alice and Dahlia
When: Afternoon
Where: camp grounds

The morning had started out rough for Dahlia, she'd woken up later than she wanted and upon getting dressed, she realized there were a few new runs in her favorite pair of stockings. It would take a while to get used to this, she sighed, no more new stockings when you wanted them. She kicked at her trunk, an attempt to shake out the frustration that'd been growing since she set out to live life outside the brothel. "Fucking cheap silk," she muttered. It was time to try and barter another pair off one of the women in the camp she figured. Sitting on her trunk she lit a smoke and looked around, trying to decide who best to ask.

Alice sighed and picked up the porcelain bowl that matched the pitcher on her desk. She had washed her face in the surprisingly cold water, and was ready to dump out what she had used. She had taken a nap, and had awakened feeling terribly dusty, as was typical for living essentially outside nowadays. She was thankful for her tent. She washed her face and hands several times a day, preferring to make the effort over and over rather than have the gritty feeling in her pores. Stepping outside the tent, she poured the water out and sighed, blowing a stray hair off of her forehead.

Dahlia watched as a woman came out of her tent, pouring water onto the dirt. For a moment Dahlia felt a pang of jealousy, anyone with a tent was damn lucky.

"Hey," she yelled, stamping out her cigarette under her heel, "You wanna help a fellow lady out?"

Alice turned her head to look at the woman who had addressed her, placing a flattened hand above her eyes so that she could see her. She had never, in all of her 21 years as a carnival baby, seen so stunning a tattooed woman.

"Hey!" she replied, smiling and holding the bowl carelessly in her left hand. "What can I do?"

Dahlia slid off the trunk and walked over to Alice, looking her over. She was in excellent shape, must be some kind of gymnast she thought to herself.

"I'm in the market for a pair of stockings, I was thinking we could trade, maybe I have something you need?", the words rolled off her heavily painted lips smoothly, hinting at a kind of flirtation.

Alice nodded. "I know I have some," she said, drawing open the flap of her tent and holding it for her new aquaintence. "What kind do you need?" She hardly ever wore the damn things, especially not when she was doing her act. She did so much gripping with her legs that anything soft and slippery like stockings would make it so she had no grip whatsoever. She went into one of her trunks and looked through her hoisery. "As for trading...." she looked at the other girl's face. "Have any face paint?"

Dahlia's eyes lit up, "Doesn't matter", there was no reason to be picky when she wore them mostly for herself. "I've got some make up, most of it isn't too used," she offered.

Waiting outside the tent Dahlia tried not too look inside, while she had a hard time keeping her nose out of others business she wanted to finish the deal first.

Alice dug around a bit more and picked up a pair of stockings she'd only worn once, to some sort of beginning of summer party that the managers of her last carnival had thrown for the outfit. She lined them up next to each other neatly, to make sure it was indeed a pair, and that they didn't have any rips or holes in them and satisfied that they were more than fit for a trade, she brought them to Dahlia. "Here you are."

"I'll take anything blue," she said, smiling. She painted blue designs of varied hues on her face, often by mixing blue makeup powders and water, or with blue face paints. "Or any dark rose colored lipstick."

Picking up the stockings gingerly, making sure not to rip this pair as fast as she usually did, "These are perfect,".

"You can come and look through my makeup case," she said, pointing in the direction of her trunk. "I'm pretty sure you'll find something that'll work",

"Okay," Alice said, nodding. "I'll follow you."

She closed the flap of her tent and waited for Dahlia to lead the way. "I'm Alice. Trapeze. Whats your act?"
dahlia_lisette on July 16th, 2008 01:21 am (UTC)
"Dahlia, the tattooed lady," she squinted in the sun, kicking at the dirt every few steps that she took.

Coming upon her belongings, which were settled pretty close to the other tents she pulled a key out of her top and opened the lock securing the contents of the wooden trunk. Pushing a completely unorganized mess of lingerie, shoes and accessories around she finally pulled out a leather train case.

Undoing the straps holding it closed she handed it to Alice, the small case just as messy as her trunk. She'd collected a fair amount of make up, in various colors but it was her black eye liner she really loved.

"Have at it," she smiled.

Alice considered this an official invitaiton to stare at Dahlia's tattoos. "The work is absolutely amazing.

Alice took the train case gingerly in her hands, opening it with one hand while she held it as carefully as one would a toddler in the other. With nimble fingers, she turned various types of maquilleage about in the case, examining the different shades.

"How many differnet artists?" she asked, nodding towards Dahlia's tattoos.
dahlia_lisette on July 16th, 2008 01:36 am (UTC)
"Only a handful," she paused trying to remember the exact number. Dahlia spent more time trying to find someone to tattoo her than she had in the chair. Men were usually uneasy about tattooing young women.

"Guess I picked decent ones," she laughed, turning her attention back to her trunk. Digging out a lace fan she gave the trunk a once over before closing it.

Alice nodded. She dug about until she found a pretty black palate filled with a lovely navy blue powder. Alice grinned, aware that she could both use this shade as eye shadow and add a bit of water to it with a brush and turn it into a beautiful face paint.

She picked it up and showed it to Dahlia, smiling "This one."
dahlia_lisette on July 17th, 2008 04:16 pm (UTC)
"That'll look really good with your eyes," Dahlia smiled. Her coloring didn't allow for a shade like that too look appealing. Still she could never help herself when it came to collecting treasures that promised some kind of beauty.

"So, what do you think of the whole setup here?" she asked, sitting on the trunk's lid.
fortunesalice on July 17th, 2008 07:33 pm (UTC)
Alice smiled, holding her new makeup in her mouth as she carefully closed the makeup train case. Placing it beside Dahlia on top of the trunk, she took the palate out of her mouth and thought for a moment.

"It's a pretty nice setup...I've been in all kinds of outfits...this one could be pretty successful. I'm anxious to see all of the other acts."

"I know, things have been quiet these past few days," she looked around the campground as if expecting some kind of sudden change.

"And it doesn't seem like there's anyone in charge," for a second she thought of Laurent who'd hired her, but she hadn't seen him since their initial meeting.

Alice nodded "I expected someone to give us some sort of hokey motivational speech, and maybe talk a bit about the circut. I've been here a few days now and I've only talked to carnies...except for the guy that told me where to put my tent."

Alice was used to parental figures, older men and women who were mentor, surrogate family types when it came to management, and she couldn't imagine that the people running the carnival were not much older than she herself was.

"Have you met anyone else?"
dahlia_lisette on July 17th, 2008 07:51 pm (UTC)
Dahlia nodded, "Only the one who hired me and a contortionist, though I haven't seen him around since my first night," talking about this with Alice made her wonder what exactly was going on with the carnivale.

"To be honest I'm not used to having no direction," she said thinking of how much easier things had been before. There was always someone to tell her what to do or where to go.
fortunesalice on July 17th, 2008 07:57 pm (UTC)
Alice nodded gravely. "Me either. I'm used to the exact opposite-meddlesome management. Although, as annoying as it was, it made for damn organized outfits."

Alice suddenly got the chills. "This seems...strange." She paused for a moment. "Do you dance, or are you usually part of a 10 in 1?"
dahlia_lisette on July 17th, 2008 08:01 pm (UTC)
"This is the first time I'm working in a carnivale, before I working in a brothel. I'm figuring I'll do a cross between a strip tease and just being looked at."

She hadn't been told much about what she was going to do, or if there was even a musician for her to dance to.

"Have you had a chance to practice yet? I've just been wasting time waiting for someone to tell me what to do."
fortunesalice on July 17th, 2008 08:09 pm (UTC)
"Oh wow," Alice said, grinning. "Carnivals are fun. I was born in one. It becomes like a huge family, but it must have been the same for you since you were living where you were working."

Alice was impressed. This would be one hell of a lure in cooch dance...a pretty woman and tattooed to boot, most of the men in these towns, especially the small ones, are looking for something exotic like that.

"If you don't mind my saying, as well, since you worked in a brothel, there would be opportunities to turn tricks, if that's your thing. You can jack up the prices quite high, since you're a physical novelty, and since most of these tiny towns have shit for brothels anyway, they'll be dying to try something different. Plus managements are usually pretty good about letting you keep a significant bit from your johnnies, since they're getting a cut of the dancing anyway, and the rest isn't exactly advertised." She smiled.
dahlia_lisette on July 17th, 2008 08:13 pm (UTC)
Dahlia thought back to the rant she'd encountered when she offered this exact thing.

"The guy who gave me the job told me there wouldn't be any tricks without a pimp," she sighed. "But if things don't pick up soon I might do it anyway, I'd be making more money doing that on the side than just waiting."

Dahlia seemed pretty pleased with herself for considering to go against management's orders, it wasn't something she was used to.

"Were your parents traipse artists too?"
fortunesalice on July 18th, 2008 01:24 pm (UTC)
"Well," she said, giving a sly smile "One or two couldn't hurt anyone. Especially if you and the Johnny are the only two who know anything about it."

Alice smiled, thinking about her parents. "My mother was a trapeze artist. She was raised in a carnival as well. My father was a ringmaster. He started as a roustie when he was a teenager and worked his way up."
dahlia_lisette on July 18th, 2008 04:03 pm (UTC)
One of the things Dahlia was starting to miss most since embarking on her new profession was the closeness she'd felt to the other women she was working it. Talking with Alice was beginning to make her feel like this wouldn't be as bad as she had figured it would.

"You ever tan?" Dahlia asked, noting the sun growing stronger and stronger. "It's perfect for laying out right now".
fortunesalice on July 28th, 2008 03:25 am (UTC)
Alice laughed "Usually only by accident. I sometimes set up the whole flying trapeze act outside instead of in a big top, where I've got more room, and I end up burning myself terribly." She smiled..."but I suppose I could...the sun does feel quite nice on the skin this time of day."
dahlia_lisette on July 28th, 2008 06:06 pm (UTC)
Dahlia smiled, spreading a bed sheet on the ground for the two of them. Removing her shoes she lied down, inviting Alice to do the same.

Closing her eyes, she let the sun begin to soak into her skin, adding to the golden tan she was always working on.
